    Abdominal sleepers are the exotics in the distribution of sleep positions. Only about 13% choose the abdominal position. Regardless of which sleeping position you prefer to fall asleep: Healthy sleepers change their sleeping position on average 25 times a night, so sleep in abdominal, lateral, and back positions.

    An abdominal sleeper pillow should be particularly flat so that the cervical spine is not overstretched. Many abdominal sleeper pillows are star-shaped. The recesses on the sides are designed to make breathing easier and to reduce breathing moisture in the pillow. In a belly position, we breathe closer to the pillow than in any other sleeping position. The material from which an abdominal sleeper pillow is made must withstand this humid, warm sleeping climate. Breathable materials, which allow the resulting moisture to spread and evaporate quickly, are particularly advantageous for abdominal sleeper cushions.

    For a restful sleep, we need exercise. Not just before the night to get tired. About three times an hour we turn in sleep. This stimulates blood circulation and distributes the tissue fluid in the intervertebral discs. Too quiet sleep permanently damages the intervertebral discs. Mattresses with particularly high position change resistance make turning difficult so that the deep sleep phase is interrupted.

    Whether you define yourself as a side, back, or abdominal sleeper is decided by the known sleep position. Many people take their place of sleep again at the end of the night, before consciously waking up so that they believe that they have not moved. A mistake – who sleeps healthily rotates.     Is there no alternative to a belly sleeper pillow?

So it is quite a healthy alternative to push away the normal pillow to the respiration away side of the body and to put your head directly on the mattress. If you fall asleep in a belly position next to the pillow, you will almost automatically turn back to the pillow when turning to the side or back position. While you wake up to 80 times a night unconsciously and change the sleeping position about 25 times, you can at best adjust your pillow for the new sleeping position and continue to sleep undisturbed and without any memory. An explicit abdominal sleeper pillow is therefore not necessary and may not support sufficient in back or side position. The cost savings can also be serious in this case: Belly sleeper pillows, like many niche products, often have far higher prices than mass-compatible neck support cushions and other conventional headrests.


    Is the abdominal position unhealthy?

The heavier the sleeper, the more pressure the bodyweight exerts on the internal organs. Also, the spine is not stored in a straight resting position, which can lead to pain in the morning.

    The head is strongly turned to the side so as not to hinder breathing. The extreme rotation of the cervical vertebrae can result in tension and blockages in the shoulder and neck area. Nerves in this sensitive area can be pinched or dragged, blood circulation to vital organs and extremities can be restricted, and breathing can be made more difficult by pressure on the lungs. Many abdominal sleepers also angle one leg. This position relieves the pelvic muscles but additionally twists the spine in the lumbar area.

    Those who get used to it not only save themselves the abdominal sleeper pillow, but also possible health consequences of the abdominal position. Pregnant women, who are unable to sleep at a certain degree of pregnancy, know that it is possible to wean the sleeping position.


    Dangerous abdominal position in newborns

Pillows, however flat baby and abdominal sleeper pillows may be, are still unnecessary and carry the risk of covering the airways. They, therefore, do not belong in the cot. Co-sleeping in the family bed should also ensure that as few blankets and pillows as possible are close to the child.

Most infants sleep much deeper on their stomachs and, as many parents notice, for the first time for a long time at a time. Sounds tempting, but in this defenseless deep sleep lies one of the dangers for the child. Also, with just a few months, it does not yet have sufficient motor skills to free itself from a critical situation on its own. It cannot turn around on its own, nor can it remove a blocking blanket or pillow from the airways. Therefore again: no unnecessary objects in the cot – no baby or abdominal sleeper pillows, no cuddly toys or blankets. As sad as it looks, a bare bed with a baby in a sleeping bag is the safest.

    Even an uneven surface or too soft mattress can be a disaster for the infant in a belly position. In clients, which occur when they sink too deep, the exhaled carbon dioxide can accumulate and lead to suffocation death. The uniform medical recommendation is therefore not to let the child sleep in an abdominal position.
